Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA)
Institutional Research Training Grants (Parent T32) (Predoctoral Individual)

This award enables research institutions to support predoctoral research training in specific areas and fields of shortage. Selection of institutions is by national competition; trainees are selected through local review procedures established by the program director at the grantee institution. Trainees are required to pursue their research training full-time, and trainees in clinical areas are expected to confine their clinical duties to those that are part of their research training. Trainees must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or legal permanent residents of the U.S. Persons on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

At the time of appointment, trainees must have received a baccalaureate degree and must be training at the graduate level in a program leading to the Ph.D., Sc.D., or other equivalent degree. Trainees who wish to interrupt their medical, dental, veterinary, or other professional school studies to engage in full-time research training before completing their professional degrees are also eligible. These awards do not support study leading to the M.D., D.O., D.D.S., or other similar professional degrees, nor do they support residency training.

Institutional grants are renewable, through competition, for up to 5 years.

Applications for NRSA Institutional Grants requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs in any given year must receive prior approval from the NHLBI before submitting an application. Please see the NHLBI T32 Supplemental Guidelines (Section III. Application Procedures, B.) for requesting approval.

Applications due?

• January 25 - The NHLBI will accept all types of competing T32 applications (new, renewal, and resubmission) on this date.
• September 25 - Only resubmission T32 applications will be accepted on this date.
  

Allowable Costs: This T32 award provides a stipend, funds toward tuition and fees, and an Institutional Allowance which can be used to help defray fellowship expenses such as health insurance, research supplies, equipment, books, and travel to scientific meetings. See NOT-OD-11-067 for details.
