Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Short-Term
Institutional Research Training Grants (Parent T35) (Trainees in Health
Professional Schools)
This
program provides funds to research institutions to make awards
to individuals in health professional schools for research
opportunities that would not be available through their regular
course of study. Awards are made to training institutions
by national competition. Trainees are selected by the grantee
institution and must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals,
or legal permanent residents of the U.S.
Trainees should have successfully completed
at least one semester at an accredited school of medicine, optometry,
osteopathy, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, or public
health before entering the program. The award can be used to support individuals who already have an M.S. or Ph.D. and have been accepted to health professional schools. The award cannot be used
to support courses that are required for the M.D., D.O., D.D.S.,
D.V.M., or similar professional degrees. Research elective credit
may be granted for students who complete a short-term research
training experience supported by the T35. The decision to award
elective credit will be at the discretion of the NHLBI and must
be consistent with the policies of the NHLBI. Any additional
costs associated with the decision to allow research elective
credit may not be charged to the T35. Students in a combined
M.D./Ph.D. program and those already studying
in formal programs leading to the M.S. or Ph.D. are ineligible. In schools of
pharmacy, only candidates for the doctor of pharmacy degree
are eligible.
Applications for NRSA Institutional Grants
requesting $500,000 or more in direct costs in any given year
must receive prior approval from the NHLBI before submitting
an application. Applicants for the T35 program should review
the procedures for requesting approval in the NHLBI
T32 Supplemental Guidelines (Section III. Application Procedures,
B.).
