Mentored Career Award for Faculty at Institutions That Promote Diversity (K01)
(Postdoctoral Individuals/New Independent Researchers)


This program provides research support to faculty members at an eligible institution with an institutional mission focused on serving minority and other health disparity populations or with federal recognition of the same who can conduct high quality research in the areas of cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic, or sleep disorders. Important NHLBI program goals are to enhance the institution's science infrastructure by developing the research career and teaching skills of the candidate.

Candidates for this award must be faculty members at an institution who:  1) are U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents by the time of the award;  2) have a doctoral degree or equivalent in a biomedical or behavioral science at least two years prior to the award and have a full-time faculty appointment at an accredited college or university at the time of award; and 3) wish to receive specialized training in cardiovascular, pulmonary, hematologic, or sleep disorders research. Each candidate must identify and complete arrangements with a mentor (at the same institution or at a collaborating research center) who is recognized as an accomplished investigator in the proposed research area and who will provide guidance for the candidate's career development and research plan.

Who is eligible? All faculty members at domestic institutions with an institutional mission focused on serving minority and other health disparity populations underrespresented in scientific research, or institutions that have been identified by federal legislation as having specifically focused institutional missions.

NHLBI has a 6 year limit of cumulative support on institutional and mentored Ks (e.g., K12 or KL2 plus the K01). A candidate for the K01 may not concurrently apply for or have an award pending for any other NIH career development award.

The opportunities? Research training and mentored career development

Duration of support? 3 to 5 years, at least 9 person-months (75 percent of full-time professional effort)

Where? At domestic institutions with an institutional mission focused on serving minority and other health disparity populations underrepresented in scientific research, or institutions that have been identified by federal legislation as having specifically focused institutional missions.

Applications due? July 9, 2012; February 7, 2013; February 7,2014; by 5:00 PM local time of applicant organization.

Salary: Faculty -- up to $75,000 per year plus fringe benefits and up to $36,000 for research development support for new awards.

Letter of Intent: Prospective applicants are asked to submit a letter of intent for applications to the Director, Office of Scientific Review at the address listed below.  Although a letter of intent is not required, is not binding, and does not enter into the review of a subsequent application, the information that it contains allows the NHLBI staff to estimate the potential review workload and plan the review.
