The Smith trail is the first national historic trail to follow a route on water. The historic routes cover approximately 3,000 miles of the Bay and its tributaries, and they may be accessed from hundreds of points throughout Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. More detailed information, including maps and trail guides, is available at many locations and water trails around the Chesapeake Bay. Scientists estimate that at least 100,000 archaeological sites are scattered around the Chesapeake Bay; however only a small percentage of those are documented.
