  • Towpath at Big Slackwater OPEN

    As of September 22, 2012 the towpath is now open in the area known as Big Slackwater (Mile 85.8-88.9). The road detour no longer needs to be used. Towpath access at McMahons Mill (mile 88.1) is still closed until further notice.

Operating Hours & Seasons

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is open during daylight hours year round. The Great Falls Tavern, Williamsport and Cumberland visitor centers operate year round, while other park visitor centers operate on a seasonal schedule. All facilities are closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. For hours of operation and visitor center information please select from the following list of visitor center locations.

Did You Know?

There are several gold mines in the Great Falls area.  The largest of these is the Maryland Mine located at the intersection of Falls Road and MacArthur Boulevard near Potomac, Maryland.  Gold was first discovered here by a Union soldier from Pennsylvania during the Civil War.
