PA'I Foundation

Aiea, Hawaii
$150,000

The PA'I Foundation is dedicated to preserving the heritage of Hawaii, and aims to ensure that the state's cultural traditions are passed down to future generations.

To this end, the PA'I Foundation is developing plans for a Traditional Hawaiian Cultural Center, which will showcase and support contemporary native-Hawaiian visual artists and traditional cultural practitioners. The cultural center will include classroom space and performance space for hula, music, and other traditional practices. In response to Honolulu's expensive home ownership and rental market, which severely impact the low-income workforce, the center will also feature live/work space for artists and their families. Artist gatherings, public planning meetings, workshops, festivals, and other outreach activities will engage the community throughout the development process and will promote opportunities for social engagement and creative collaboration. The PA'I Foundation will partner with the University of Hawaii to offer workshops with master teachers of Hawaiian music and dance; additional partners include the City and County of Honolulu and Artspace Projects, Inc.
