Background Information
Sample Map Hazardous waste handlers treat, store, and dispose of hazardous wastes. Hazardous wastes pose a substantial or potential hazard to human health or the environment when improperly managed. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) requires that hazardous waste handlers provide information concerning their activities to State environmental agencies. These agencies then provide the information to regional and national U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offices. The EPA oversees the regulation of hazardous waste handlers and develops approaches and technologies to support efficient hazardous waste cleanup. This map layer was produced by the EPA. The EPA Envirofacts Data - Hazardous Waste Handlers map layer shows locations of more than 534,000 hazardous waste facilities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands as of May, 2005. Descriptive information includes the facility name and identification number.
