Staff Attorney Openings — Help Shape The Capital Markets

The SEC's Division of Trading and Markets often has openings for staff attorneys in one or more offices in the Division. The Division has approximately 240 employees, the majority of whom are attorneys.

The Division is the principal group within the SEC that is responsible for administering the provisions of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 that pertain to U.S. securities markets and participants in those markets, including broker-dealers.

Among other things, the Division:

  • drafts and interprets rules to protect investors from fraudulent and manipulative practices

  • sets standards for the operation of brokerage firms

  • oversees national securities exchanges

  • oversees the trading, clearing and settlement of securities.

Staff attorneys have the opportunity to play a significant role in shaping important legal and policy decisions that pertain to securities markets and market participants. The Division is organized according to subject areas and staff attorneys work on a variety of matters within a particular office's jurisdiction. Staff attorneys assist in drafting new rules; drafting amendments to and interpreting existing rules; reviewing proposed rule changes submitted by regulated entities; drafting responses to requests for no-action or exemptive relief; consulting with other SEC offices or federal financial agencies; reviewing legislation; and working on special projects.

Applicants should have a J.D. from an accredited law school and be a member of the bar. Candidates should have a minimum of two years of legal experience, as a member of the bar, in the securities field or in a related financial field and have strong writing, communication, and analytical skills. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of the statutes and regulations administered by the Commission, with a particular emphasis on the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, are especially desirable.

Interested attorneys should send an e-mail to TM-Resumes@sec.gov and attach: (1) a cover letter addressed to: "Hiring Personnel, Division of Trading and Markets," outlining your relevant background and experience; and (2) a current resume. Please include "Staff Attorney Position" in the subject line of your message. Attorneys selected for an interview will be asked to provide a law school transcript in the case of candidates with less than five years of legal experience, a 5 to 10 page writing sample, and references. Unless your correspondence indicates otherwise, the Division of Trading and Markets is permitted to share your application materials with other SEC Divisions and Offices.
