Research Project Grant Supplements

  • PA-12-149 - Research Supplements to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research

    These research supplements seek to improve the diversity of the research workforce by supporting and recruiting students, post-doctorates, and eligible investigators from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in cancer and cancer health disparities research. Candidates include individuals from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, individuals with disabilities, and individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • PA-12-150 - Supplements to Promote Reentry into Biomedical and Behavioral Research Careers

    This initiative supports individuals with high potential to reenter an active biomedical and behavioral research career after taking time off to care for children or parents or to attend to other family responsibilities.

    Eligible Candidates: Individuals who were in a postdoctoral or faculty position at the time they left active research and/or have doctoral degrees, such as M.D., D.D.S., Ph.D., O.D., D.V.M., or equivalent.
  • Supplement to the NCI Paul Calabresi Award for Clinical Oncology (K12S)

    The purpose of the K12 CURE supplement is to increase the number of medical doctors and Oncology Registered Nurses with doctoral degrees from underrepresented populations who are motivated and properly trained to: (1) communicate and collaborate with basic/behavioral research scientists in order to expedite the translation of basic/behavioral information into patient-oriented research; (2) perform independent clinical research that develops and tests rational scientific hypotheses based on fundamental and clinical research findings with the potential for improving the medical care of cancer patients; and (3) design and test innovative clinical protocols and manage all phases (i.e., pilot/Phase I, Phase II, Phase III) of clinical trials research.

Career Development Awards

  • PAR-12-050 NCI Mentored Career Development Award To Promote Diversity (K01)

    The K01 provides support for intensive research career development over a duration of 3, 4, or 5 years under the guidance of an experienced mentor in the biomedical, behavioral or clinical sciences leading to research independence. This award targets individuals that have a research or health professional doctoral degree and are from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in biomedical research. This unique award provides the opportunity for the recipients to participate in peer-review related activities at the NCI throughout the duration of the award.

    The K08 initiative provides an intensive, supervised research experience for health professionals with degrees such as a M.D., D.C., D.D.S., D.O., O.D., D.V.M., and N.D. and who are from groups shown to be underrepresented in biomedical research. The initiative enables trainees to acquire the research expertise needed to pursue a career in laboratory-based biomedical cancer research.

Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (PACHE)

  • PAR-09-201 - Feasibility Studies for Collaborative Interaction for Minority Institution/Cancer Center Partnership (P20)

    The P20 initiative helps researchers and faculty at MSIs, working in collaboration with the researchers and faculty of NCI-designated Cancer Centers (or other institutions with highly organized, integrated research efforts focused on cancer), plan and implement focused collaborations in cancer research, cancer training, or cancer education. The expectation is that these planning grants will become the basis for generating an array of competitively funded grant applications by the NCI/NIH and other agencies, and other grants such as multidisciplinary research grants (e.g., R01s, P01s); training and career development grants (e.g., T32s; K12s, K01, etc); and or education grants (e.g., R25s).

  • PAR-12-055 Comprehensive Partnerships to Advance Cancer Health Equity (Limited Competition U54)

    The U54 initiative implements comprehensive partnerships between MSIs and NCI-designated Cancer Centers (or groups of centers) that will develop a stronger national cancer program aimed at understanding the reasons behind the significant cancer disparities and impact on minority populations. The comprehensive partnership must be predominantly focused on cancer research, training and outreach; cancer education is optional. The partnership application must be based on previous extensive planning and priority setting activities and must achieve goals that are of clear mutual benefits.

Other Opportunities

  • American Association for Cancer Research's (AACR) Young Minority Scientists in the Field of Cancer

    This initiative provides support for minority students, faculty researchers and young minority physicians to attend the national meetings of the AACR, and, in particular, to stimulate participation of predoctoral and postdoctoral minority students as well as young minority clinicians in cancer research. The Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award covers registration, transportation, meals and lodging.

  • HBCU Faculty in the Field of Cancer

    The purpose of this initiative is to increase the scientific knowledge base and participation of faculty from Historically Black Colleges and Universities in cancer research, the AACR provides support, through the HBCU Faculty in the Field of Cancer Award. This award will provide travel and subsistence funds to support the attendance of meritorious faculty members from eligible institutions at annual meetings or special conferences on more focused scientific topics of the AACR.
