Dr. Alison Lin is a Program Director in the Diversity Training Branch within the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In this role, Dr. Lin manages CURE supplements to several programs, including P30 Cancer Center Support Grants (CCSGs) for the NCI-designated Cancer Centers, the R25T Cancer Education and Career Development Program, the K12 Paul Calabresi Career Development Award for Clinical Oncology, and the P50 Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE).
Before joining NIH in 2012, Dr. Lin was an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. She conducted interdisciplinary research focused on understanding the molecular interactions of membrane proteins and their signaling mechanisms, particularly those that modulate the cytoskeleton. Dr. Lin's scientific studies combined not only the techniques, but also the conceptual approaches of physical, biological, biochemical and genetic disciplines. She has reported the findings in peer-reviewed publications and at various national and international conferences.
In addition to performing research, Dr. Lin served as a research mentor for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students; postdoctoral fellows; and teachers. She also volunteered for outreach programs for younger children, such as Girls Enjoy Math and Science (GEMS). Other volunteer activities included assisting in the Patient/Family Relations and the Emergency Departments at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, as well as reading and recording for the Learning Ally (formerly Recording For the Blind and Dyslexic, RFB&D).
Dr. Lin received her Ph.D. in Physics/Biophysics from the University of California, Santa Barbara (2001) for work on the optimization of non-viral cationic lipid DNA carriers in gene delivery. She received her B.S. in Physics, summa cum laude, from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. Dr. Lin is a happy alumna of the University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP).
