The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is committed to finding innovative, promising treatments for people with cancer. The NCI’s Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine OCCAM) coordinates the Institute’s research program in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Since 1991, the NCI has had a process for evaluating data from CAM practitioners that involves the same rigorous scientific methods employed in evaluating treatment responses with conventional medicine. This process, called the NCI Best Case Series (BCS) Program, provides an independent review of medical records and medical imaging from patients treated with unconventional cancer therapies.

Through this program, staff from the OCCAM work with CAM practitioners to identify appropriate, well-documented cases. The primary goal of this program is to obtain and review sufficient information to determine if NCI-initiated research on a specific intervention is warranted.
