| Dear Partners, This week I am excited to share with you information regarding the Earned Income Tax Credit in our featured update, as well as the Assets for Independence in our Featured Grant section. Assets for Independence is an exciting program that supports organizations to provide community members financial management skills and the tools to buy a first home, go back to school or start a business. I hope you will continue to read and visit the new, expanded grant opportunities section at the bottom of this newsletter which lists 26 currently open grants available to organizations like yours. Haiti Update: For those of you, whose organizations are working on the ground in Haiti, please note: The U.S. Transportation Command posted instructions today on its Web site offering instructions to non-profit organizations seeking air and sea lift for humanitarian supplies and relief personnel in Haiti. "How Do I Get Lift?" is an interactive presentation which steers customers through the process of acquiring qualifying military-provided transportation for cargo or people. The presentation is located on the USTRANSCOM Web site at http://www.transcom.mil/TransportFAQs.ppsx. It is a resource guide which allows customers to investigate either air or surface transportation options. Surface transportation includes ship, train and truck. USAID will be holding a series of conference calls in an effort to coordinate the efforts of the US Government, United Nations and Non-Profit Organizations working on Haiti Relief. Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day 2010 is January 29th!
As Tax day approaches, we at the Partnership Center wanted to pass along the following message from our colleagues at the Internal Revenue Service regarding tax credit programs that can help hard working families keep more money in their pockets! See below for more information:
One of the largest benefit programs for working families is also one of the most overlooked tax credits. It’s called the Earned Income Tax Credit and, as the name implies, it’s for people who work for a living but don’t make a lot of money. Rural residents, self-employed people such as farmers, childless workers and grandparents raising grandchildren are among those who may be eligible but do not try and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit.
It’s easy to see how the Earned Income Tax Credit can make life a little easier in these hard times. A married couple with three children and an income ranging from $12,570 to $21,420 could be eligible for the maximum tax credit of $5,657. Taxpayers making as much as $48,279 could qualify for EITC and can get tax returns prepared for no charge at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance site in their local community. Many communities offer 211 or 311 telephone numbers to locate vital services. If not, taxpayers can call the IRS volunteer assistance locator number at 1-800-906-9887 to locate free tax assistance in their community.
How can you and your organization help? By spreading the word, leaving a brochure (Spanish language brochure) with a client or making a mention in a local publication or Sunday bulletin. If you’re looking for a timely angle, consider speaking out on Awareness Day to highlight the Earned Income Tax Credit in the media. For 2010, the date is January 29. Scores of news conferences will be held nationwide.

Featured Grant Opportunity
Assets for Independence Grant Funding helps American families reach economic stability and stay there.
The Assets for Independence (AFI) program provides five-year grants to nonprofit organizations -- including faith-based organizations -- that help low-income families to become economically self-sufficient for the long-term. Organizations awarded an Assets for Independence Grant provide financial education and training on money management issues, and they assist participants with saving earned income in special matched savings accounts called Individual Development Accounts (IDAs). Participants use their IDAs to accumulate funds with the specific goal of acquiring a first home, college education, or starting up or expanding a small business. Applications for the Assets for Independence Grant Funding Program are accepted over three cycles during the year. Due dates for each cycle are as follows:
Winter Cycle -- January 15, 2010
Spring Cycle -- March 25, 2010

Description: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for research centers that conduct drug abuse and addiction research that have outstanding innovative science and that are multidisciplinary, thematically integrated, synergistic, and are/will be serving as national resource(s) for the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) research fields. It is expected that a Center will transform knowledge in the sciences it is studying. Incremental work should not be the focus of Center activities; rather, new and creative directions are required.

Title: HEALTH DISPARITIES RESEARCH ON MINORITY AND UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS
Description: The overarching goal of this FOA is to solicit innovative research addressing elements that eliminates health disparities. Research focused on disease and/or conditions that disproportionately affect racial/ethnic minorities is a growing field and has been employed lately in understanding dynamics contributing to health disparities. Funding for this FOA will support investigators who propose to conduct health disparities research using its principles to improve health inequities. The research should take into account the characteristics of health systems and health seeking behaviors that propagate disparities.

Title: INNOVATIVE FAITH-BASED APPROACHES TO HEALTH DISPARITIES RESEARCH
Description: Applications for this grant should propose multidisciplinary interventions on health disparities, involving social determinants of health, health behavior, disease prevention, and health promotion. Specifically those jointly conducted with faith-based organizations or faith-motivated programs and the research community will be encouraged to apply. The ultimate goal is to foster intervention research on effective faith-motivated initiatives that have played an important role in addressing health disparities. Funding is also intended to provide support for early and conceptual stages of exploratory and developmental research projects. Overall, this grant will allow applicants to 1) Examine the role and unique characteristics of faith communities in addressing health disparities, 2) Design targeted interventions, and 3) Track the efficacy of faith-motivated initiatives.

Title: ADOLESCENT MEDICINE TRIALS NETWORK FOR HIV/AIDS INTERVENTIONS

Title: ORAL HEALTH PROMOTION RESEARCH ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Description: This funding opportunity is intended to encourage the development, implementation and testing of oral health promotion interventions directed at improving oral health across the lifespan. The research team must include someone with extensive experience in health promotion, behavioral and /or social science research. Title: National Resource Center for Hearing Screening and Intervention in Newborns
Description: The purpose of this cooperative agreement is to provide national leadership on implementation of sustainable statewide newborn hearing screening and intervention. Title: DRUG FREE COMMUNITIES SUPPORT PROGRAM
Description: The purpose of this program is to establish and strengthen collaboration to support the efforts of community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among youth. This grant is offered on behalf of the Drug Free Communities Support Program (DFC), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). DFC is accepting applications for this grant in order to reduce substance use among youth and, over time, reduce substance abuse among adults by: 1) Addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse, and 2) Promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. Please note that for the purpose of this grant, substances include, but are not limited to, narcotics, depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens, inhalants, marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco, where their use is prohibited by Federal, State, or local law. Substances may also include the non-medical use of prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines.

Description: Applicants must meet the following programmatic goals: 1) Deliver Chronic Disease Self-Management Programs (CDSMPs) to at least 50,000 individuals, 2) Document the extent to CDSMPs are being implemented with fidelity to the original research design, 3) Strengthen the capacity of states and communities to sustain CDSMPs after the grant period. The CENTER will provide an array of technical assistance and evaluative support that includes: two national meetings, web-based training, on-site visits, targeted teleconferences, peer-to-peer mentoring, strategies and models for developing statewide and community-level CDSMP distribution systems.
