Dear Partners, The first signs of spring are arriving and the Partnership Center team has been meeting with organizations like yours to discuss issues of the day. Thank you for all of your innovative work in communities across the country. I would like to bring your attention to National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Women and girls account for over a quarter of all new infections in the United States. It has never been more important to speak up and talk about HIV to the women in your community. More information is provided below. Please see this week’s featured update section to hear about Deputy Director Acacia Salatti’s recent visit to Alabama for the 45th Anniversary of the historic civil rights march across Edmund Pettus bridge which is known as Bloody Sunday. The HHS Partnership Center Participates in the 2010 Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage
My name is Acacia Bamberg Salatti and I am the Deputy Director of the HHS Partnership Center. It is an honor for me to work with faith-based and community organizations and to assist them in their important mission of serving persons in need. As the former agriculture staffer for Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, I am deeply aware of the diverse roles community and faith-based organizations play in our neighborhoods. Thank you for your presence in the community; it is felt in ways both large and small.
As we celebrate Women’s History Month this March, it is also important to recognize women who have contributed to our communities, with ordinary and extraordinary acts of service. Last weekend, I traveled with the Faith & Politics Institute in their annual bipartisan Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama. The three day trip commemorated the 45th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday and concluded with the crossing of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where ten thousand people joined our delegation in the re-creation of the 1965 march.
While I was humbled to participate in this journey, my most memorable experience was meeting Civil Rights veterans like Dorothy Cotton, Bettie Mae Fikes, and Juanita Abernathy. Although all are not readily known in the history books, these women put their bodies on the line for equality and justice. Cotton was a leader in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and arguably the highest ranking woman in the organization. Fikes who worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as a teenager marched on Bloody Sunday. Abernathy—the wife of Rev. Ralph Abernathy—participated in all the pivotal protests during the era, including helping to organize the local community during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. We thank them for their service to the nation, as we thank all women for their contributions, whether on a national or a local stage.
National Women & Girls HIV AIDS Awareness Day
“As we commemorate the fifth annual National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, we are reminded that in the United States, women and teenage girls accounted for more than a quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in 2007 and more than 93,900 cumulative deaths from AIDS. Black women in this country suffer disproportionately from the HIV/AIDS epidemic, as they acquire new HIV infections at nearly 15 times the rate of white women. Worldwide, half of the estimated 33.4 million people living with HIV in 2008 were female, and HIV was the leading cause of disease and death for women of childbearing age.

Description: The purpose of this funding opportunity is to provide support for research to determine the effectiveness of empiric influenza antiviral therapy, in addition to empiric antibiotic therapy, for hospitalized CAP patients during the periods when influenza viruses are circulating in the community; data from all funded sites will be collected in such a way to allow for pooling of data. The recent identification in April, 2009 and subsequent global spread of the influenza virus (H1N1), makes this an ideal time to conduct such studies.

Title: PREVENTION OF SEXUAL TRANSMISSION OF HIV/AIDS IN HAITI
Description: This program aims to increase the adoption of safer sexual behaviors among sexually active youths and adults in Haiti, in order to contribute to reduced incidence of HIV infections from sexual transmission by a) promoting normative change and preventive behaviors among sexually active youths and adults in the general population, particularly those engaged in Multiple Concurrent Partnerships that put them at risk for HIV infection and b) providing support for a comprehensive package of intensified preventive interventions targeting most-at-risk populations and venues with high prevalence of risky sexual behavior.
