Featured Update 

March is National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association. The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Our sister division, the Administration on Aging, had this to say about National Nutrition Month:

The theme for the 2010 National Nutrition Month® is “Nutrition from the Ground Up.”

Eating right and being fit are keys to staying healthy throughout life. Help feel your best by learning how to make healthy food choices – especially those that are lower in calories and packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients – and by being physically active every day.

The ADA has proposed several simple solutions for making healthy nutrition decisions.

• Make sure to get the recommended daily amounts of all food groups – including the ever-difficult fruits and vegetables.  Having a diet full of variety is also very important.
• Beware of foods that are high in saturated or trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and sugar!
• Keeping portion sizes in mind during meal-time and when snacking.  Calories can add up quickly, so try to choose nutrient-dense foods that are loaded with vitamins and minerals.
• Be sure to include physical activity as a vital component for healthful living.  Adults should be striving for at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day.
• Remember that healthful eating starts at home.  Preparing and eating well-balanced meals together as a family promotes healthy attitudes toward food, and empowers individual to make wise choices in the future.

Also this month, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at the School Nutrition Association Conference on the topic of her Let’s Move campaign.  Mrs. Obama talked about the struggles our country is currently facing in regards to the alarming rates of childhood obesity.  Of course, nutrition is a vital piece of this puzzle, and one that the First Lady plans on focusing on in Let’s Move.

One key aspect of the Let’s Move campaign is “helping parents make healthy family choices.”  Through the efforts of education and increased awareness surrounding nutrition and physical activity, families will be given the tools and motivation to create a healthful environment for their loved ones. 

This is where faith-based and community groups can really have an impact.  By offering families the information, resources, and support they need, real changes can be made on the local level.  To get involved or learn more about the Let’s Move! campaign, visit their website today, and help us make strides towards better nutrition and healthful living in your community.

Title: ADOLESCENT MEDICINE TRIALS NETWORK FOR HIV/AIDS INTERVENTIONS
Description: The primary mission of this funding opportunity will be to conduct research, both independently and in collaboration with existing research networks and individual investigators, in HIV-infected and HIV-at-risk pre-adolescents, adolescents, and young adults up to age 25 years. Title: DRUG ABUSE ASPECTS OF HIV/AIDS
Description: This funding opportunity is accepting applications to examine the drug abuse aspects of HIV/AIDS, including research on drug-related risk behaviors, addiction and HIV disease, and drug use/HIV-related comorbidities and consequences. Title: HOME AND FAMILY BASED APPROACHES FOR THE PREVENTION OR MANAGEMENT OF OVERWEIGHT OR OBESITY IN EARLY CHILDHOOD
Description: The direct goal of this initiative is to fund research that will advance knowledge for innovative approaches to the prevention or management of overweight in children less than 6 years of age, with potential for future translation to applications either in the home or linked to a community setting. Research should consider the familial mechanisms of behavior such as the role of families in the initiation, support, and reinforcement of fundamental food and beverage consumption, physical activity practices, and sedentary behaviors.  Applicants should propose clinical trials testing novel home- or family-based interventions for the prevention or management of overweight in infancy and early childhood. Description:  The purpose of the program is to reduce morbidity, premature mortality, and eliminate health disparities associated with diabetes. This will be done by funding organizations to mobilize community partners and assist them to effectively plan, develop, implement, and evaluate community-based interventions to reduce the risk factors that influence the disproportionate burden of diabetes in vulnerable populations.

Title: CAREER DEVELOPMENT GRANTS IN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH RESEARCH
Description:  The goal of the career development program is to help ensure the availability of adequate numbers of highly trained scientists to address occupational health and safety and to provide new occupational health and safety scientists with appropriate mentoring. The purpose of the grant is to provide support and 75% “protected time” for an intensive, supervised career development experience in occupational health and safety research leading to research independence.
