Dear Partners:
In America today, women are doctors and lawyers, police officers and firefighters and serve bravely in our nations military. However, many women are not receiving the healthcare they need or have been discriminated against, simply for being a woman.
Before the Affordable Care Act, insurance companies could deny coverage to women for having pre-existing conditions such as cancer or having been pregnant. In 2014, it will be illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against anyone with a pre-existing condition, or charge women higher premiums than they charge men.
To recognize the importance of women’s health, we are celebrating women’s health week, which encourages women to make their health a top priority. The theme for 2011 is “It's Your Time.” Women are encouraged to take steps to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases.
We call on faith and community leaders to remind women to schedule their annual checkups and talk to their health care providers about important health screenings, many of which will be free of charge because of the Affordable Care Act.
Our office can connect you with a number of programs through the Department of Health and Human Services, which are geared towards promoting women’s health. Let’s Move! Faith and Communities
As trusted community leaders, faith-based and neighborhood organizations are key partners in solving the problems that lead to obesity and addressing related issues of hunger. Our office in conjunction with the Office of the First Lady and the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently launched the Let’s Move! Faith and Communities website:

Faith-based and community leaders now have a single site to engage in Let’s Move! and involve their communities in the challenge to reverse the trend of childhood obesity.
Over the next year, we hope you will consider joining Let’s Move Faith and Communities as organizations around the country get active to meet one or more of these challenges:
- Walk a total of three million miles
- Complete 500,000 Presidential Active Lifestyle Awards (PALAs) or establish new exercise programs at congregations or organizations
- Host 10,000 community gardens, farmers markets, or Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) clubs at congregations or community organizations
- Host 1,000 new Summer Food Service Program sites at congregations or neighborhood organizations.

Connecting Communities for the
Common Good
Before taking the stage to officially open the Connecting Communities for the Common Good conference in Philadelphia, I climbed a towering escalator passing priests, rabbis, imams, bishops and various other faith leaders as I made my way to the main ballroom. It was an amazing sight to see 500 faith and community leaders from across the Delaware Valley join leaders from the White House, the 13 federal agency Centers for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, local officials, and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter to discuss opportunities for collaboration with the federal government.
Philadelphia was the kick off location for our interactive series of Connecting Communities for the Common Good conferences around the country and brought together a diverse audience who shared the common goal of wanting to better serve their communities. By partnering with faith and community leaders in their own hometowns, we are able to deliver tools and information directly to those local organizations doing critical work on the ground to support those in need.
New Assistance for People on Medicare and Medicaid
Among the most chronically ill in our country are the 9.2 million people who are eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, called “dual eligibles.” The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced this week that they have new initiatives to help people who are eligible for both programs. CMS is helping states meet the complex and expensive needs of these beneficiaries by awarding grants to select states to create new integrated care models, creating a technical assistance center for states and launching an initiative to align Medicare and Medicaid. CMS is looking forward to having more clear information available to those dually eligible.

Join the President’s Fatherhood and
Mentoring Initiative
Being a dad is one of the most important jobs any man can have. As the father of two young girls and someone who grew up without his dad in the home, President Obama knows firsthand the power of a father’s presence in the lives of his children – and the holes dads leave when they are absent.
That’s why he launched the President’s Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative. Its goal: to encourage individuals, especially fathers, to be involved in the lives of their children, and to be positive role models and mentors for other children in their lives and communities.
Joining the Initiative is just one way to show that you will do your part to be a positive and supportive figure in the lives of children to help them reach their full potential.
