The Partnership Center Newsletter

October 13, 2010

Dear Partners,

Last Thursday, October 7th was National Depression Screening Day (NDSD), sponsored by Screening for Mental Health. NDSD is held annually during Mental Illness Awareness Week to raise awareness about depression and to encourage community members to get screened for depression and other related issues. As a trusted leader in your community, you often are in a position to help people who are dealing with common and treatable behavioral health issues, such as depression, anxiety, substance abuse or misuse, or post-traumatic stress disorder.

Screening for Mental Health offers an anonymous, online screening that community leaders can customize with information about their organization. The screening offers quick guidance as to whether professional consultation might be helpful. HHS’ Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) also offers easy-to-use online tools to help find treatment facilities in your community for mental health and substance abuse issues. SAMHSA also has a confidential, free National Helpline for individuals and family members facing substance abuse issues.

In addition, HHS’ National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism offers online resources for people who are “Rethinking Drinking.” Visitors can check their drinking pattern, learn symptoms of an alcohol use disorder, and consider strategies for reducing their alcohol consumption. Thank you for sharing these resources with individuals and families in your community who may need help connecting to services and care.

As always, the latter section of our newsletter includes updated grants that faith-based and community non-profits can pursue. Remember that it’s always important to review the funding announcement thoroughly to ensure that the grant is one that is appropriate to your organization’s mission, size and scope.

Featured Update – Access to Recovery Grants

HHS Provides $94.8 Million in Access to Recovery (ATR) Grants

Program Expands Client Choice in Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery Support Services

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) recently awarded $94.8 million in new Access to Recovery (ATR) grant funds per year, for a total of $379 million over the next four years, to 23 States, the District of Columbia, and six Tribes and Tribal organizations.

Access to Recovery is a voucher-based program designed to provide genuine, free, and independent client choice among substance abuse clinical treatment and recovery support service providers. ATR expands access to a comprehensive array of clinical treatment and recovery support options (including faith-based programmatic options), and increases substance abuse treatment capacity.

The ATR program offers multiple ways for individuals with substance abuse problems to seek treatment. Some individuals prefer to receive treatment from a traditional clinic in their community. Others prefer to seek help from a faith or community-based organization. Some may need intensive in-patient treatment. Others may need recovery support services, such as peer support groups, job training, housing assistance, or even something as simple as transportation to a treatment session.

Since the first ATR awards in 2004, approximately $600 million in grant funds have been awarded to Single-State Substance Abuse Agencies in the States, Territories, and the District of Columbia, Tribes and Tribal organizations, and over 400,000 individuals and families have been served. Faith-based organizations have redeemed $151,090,149 in vouchers for the delivery of treatment and recovery support services.

For a list of ATR grantees, please visit http://www.samhsa.gov/newsroom/advisories/1010081330.aspx.
