The Partnership Center Newsletter

December 9, 2010

Dear Partners,

It has been a busy few weeks! We are grateful for your continued leadership for healthy communities.

Thanks to all of you who joined with over 4,500 community and faith leaders to launch Let’s Move Faith and Communities last week with First Lady Michelle Obama. Make sure you check out the blog post at LetsMove.gov for highlights of the launch.

On the call, the First Lady unveiled the Let’s Move Toolkit for Faith-based and Neighborhood Organizations to support the innovative efforts of local groups. The call also launched four exciting  challenges for Let’s Move Faith and Communities participants through 2011:

  • Walk a total of 3 million miles
  • Complete 500,000 President’s Active Lifestyle Awards (PALAs) or establish new exercise programs at congregations or organizations
  • Host 10,000 community gardens or farmers markets at congregations or community organizations
  • Host 1,000 new summer feeding program sites at congregations or neighborhood organizations.

Several faith and community leaders announced their commitments to the Let’s Move! Faith and Communities challenges! If you and your community partners decide to step up to any of these challenges, please email us at partnerships@hhs.gov or collaborate@usda.gov to let us know about your goals and ideas for putting Let’s Move! into action.

Check out the Featured Update below for details about World AIDS Day, which took place on December 1st.

As always, the latter section of our newsletter includes updated grants that faith-based and community non-profits can pursue. Remember that it’s always important to review the funding announcement thoroughly to ensure that the grant is one that is appropriate to your organization’s mission, size and scope.

Featured Update – World AIDS Day

This week, we highlighted efforts around World AIDS Day on the White House Partnerships blog. World AIDS Day, December 1st, serves as an opportunity to come together and take action to reduce HIV infection rates, and ensure access to care, within our communities. Earlier this year, the White House released the National HIV and AIDS Strategy (NHAS), which calls on every sector, including faith and community-based organizations, to work together to create ensure that HIV infections are rare, but where they do occur, that every person has unfettered access to high quality, life extending care free from stigma and discrimination.

We look forward to partnering with many of you in the coming months to put this strategy into action! To share your efforts related to World AIDS Day, or your ideas for promoting National HIV Testing Day on June 27, please contact the HHS Partnership Center at partnerships@hhs.gov.

logo: Faith & Communities FIGHT FLU. THE FLU ENDS WITH U.

We are in the middle of National Influenza Vaccination Week (“Flu Vaccine Week”)! This week lifts up the importance of the annual flu shot for everyone 6 months and older. As trusted leaders and messengers, faith and community leaders play a critical role flu prevention. You can help make sure that everyone in your community knows that an annual flu shot is the best protection against the flu – and that CDC now recommends that everyone 6 months and older get an annual flu shot.

Just in time for flu season – we created two new flu fighting resources:

  • The Seasonal Influenza (Flu) Guide for Community & Faith-based Organizations & Leaders is an accessible, easy-to-read guide written for faith and community-based leaders and organizations. The guide includes basic flu facts, everyday prevention steps, and tips to help leaders link folks to vaccination.
  • Faith and Communities Fight Flu! is a one-page flyer that highlightsfive key community flu fighting steps. It can be posted on community announcement boards or in a weekly bulletin. We are encouraging faith-based and community leaders to post this flyer throughout the flu season.

If you are reading this and have not yet gotten your flu shot, the flu vaccine locator on Flu.gov can help you find out where you can get your flu shot in your area!
