Introduction

The Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) (T32) supports institutional training grants that develop or enhance research training opportunities for early-stage investigators committed to cancer research.

PI Eligibility

Citizenship
  • At the time of the award, the candidate must be a citizen of the United States, or a non-citizen national, or must have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence and possess an Alien Registration Receipt Card (1-151 or 1-551) or some other verification of legal admission as a permanent resident.
  • Citizenship or green card is not needed to apply. Citizenship or green card is needed at the time of award issuance.
Foreign Nationals and Student VisasNot eligible for this award
Degree/Academic AppointmentEstablished Investigators (Associate and Full Professors)
CommitmentThe PI is recommended to devote 5-10% effort on the training program with no salary support. (See Training Related Expenses and Health Insurance section below for allowable administrative salary costs.)
Duration of AwardUp to 5 yrs of support
The T32 award is renewable

T32 Program Eligibility Criteria

Program PI
  • Must have independent cancer-focused R01, or R01-like, peer-reviewed research funding at the time of application and award.
Program Faculty
  • At least 50 percent of faculty must have independent R01, or R01 like, peer-reviewed cancer-focused research support.
  • The remaining faculty must have independent R01, or R01-like, cancer-related research support.
Trainees
  • No more than 25% of the individuals supported on new NCI-supported T32 grants can be pre-doctoral trainees per year.
Budget
(Direct Costs)
  • For new T32 training programs, the budgets must be less than $500,000/yr.
  • For competing renewal T32 training programs with current budgets less than $500,000/yr, the budgets must remain at less than $500,000/yr.
  • For competing renewal T32 training programs with current budgets at $500,000/yr or more, a request to maintain the current budget level must be submitted for program approval. No budget increases will be approved.

Tuition and Fees

For each pre-doctoral trainee supportedThe NCI will pay 60% of the combined amount requested for tuition and fees up to $16,000 per year.
For each combined dual-degree trainee (e.g., M.D.-Ph.D.) supportedThe NCI will pay 60% of the combined amount requested for tuition and fees up to $21,000 per year.
For each post-doctoral trainee supportedThe NCI will pay 60% of the combined amount requested for tuition and fees up to $4,500 per year.
For each post-doctoral trainee in a formal degree-granting programThe NCI will pay 60% of the combined amount requested for tuition and fees up to $16,000 per year.

Training Related Expenses and Health Insurance

For each pre-doctoral trainee supportedThe NCI will pay up to $4,200 annually for each pre-doctoral trainee to help defray other research training expenses, such as health insurance (self-only or family, as applicable), staff salaries, consultant costs, equipment, research supplies, and faculty/staff travel directly related to the research training program.
For each post-doctoral trainee supportedThe NCI will pay up to $7,850 annually for each postdoctoral trainee) to help defray other research training expenses, such as health insurance (self-only or family, as applicable), staff salaries, consultant costs, equipment, research supplies, and faculty/staff travel directly related to the research training program.
