Update: CDC and EIP Surveillance for GBS following 2009 H1N1 Influenza Vaccination
CDC has conducted active surveillance for Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in 10 states. Since October 1, 2009 through February 15, 2010, EIP has evaluated 287 patients and identified 166 confirmed or probable cases of GBS. Overall, 69% of cases were identified by the neurologist clinical network.
There were 89 males and 77 females. There were 30 cases identified for the age group 0-24 years, 51 cases for age group 25-49 years and 85 cases for ages ≥ 50 years.
Thirteen cases of GBS had a history of H1N1 vaccination prior to symptom onset. The vaccination-to-onset interval ranged between 1-33 days. The proportion of GBS cases reporting an upper respiratory tract or gastrointestinal infection within 42 days of illness onset was similar for cases following receipt or not following receipt of H1N1 vaccine.
To date, data from this surveillance initiative has not suggested an increased risk of GBS following receipt of the H1N1 vaccine. However, as H1N1 influenza vaccine is made available to the general population, continued surveillance for GBS is important.
