Description of Duties
The incumbent will perform scientific duties related to food safety/defense and public health, to include writing protocols and the design, collection, management, analysis, and interpretation of data. The work completed will contribute to the effectiveness of agency programs, and will be used to aid the Agency in taking a more proactive approach to public health safety/defense and policy.

Qualification Requirements
  • A doctoral degree in Microbiology or similar scientific discipline, which has a direct relation to microbiology or food microbiology.
  • Specialized knowledge or education in one or more of the following areas of this science is highly desirable: molecular genetics of pathogenicity and pathogen detection, biochemistry, and statistical analysis of microbiological processes.
  • Direct research experience on food safety related issues pertaining to emerging foodborne pathogens such as E. coli 0157:H7; Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, or Listeria monocytogenes. Experience in the searching, development, evaluation, validation and/or implementation of new analytical methodologies for the detection of microbial and parasitic pathogens associated with foodborne illnesses in meat, poultry and egg products. Statistical analysis and writing skills necessary and appropriate for the production of high quality scientific papers, publications and other documents concerning food safety related issues of concern to the Agency.
  • Note: Candidates must have received their doctoral degree within the last 3 years.

Promotion Potential
GS-13, future promotion depends on incumbent's demonstrated performance and ability to assume additional responsibility.
