Section 508

Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 requires Federal Agencies to make their electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible to people with disabilities, this includes our websites. The reasoning behind this act is that inaccessible technology interferes with a disabled individual's ability to obtain and use information quickly and easily.

There are two primary disabilities we have to consider when making accessible electronic and information technology, visual and auditory.

For Visual impairments we have to consider users that have:

  • Full Blindness
  • Partial Blindness
  • Other Visual Impairments
  • Colorblindness

For Auditory impairments we have to consider users that are:

  • Fully deaf
  • Partially deaf

The IHS Web Services team has developed very specific ways to program out websites to accommodate the needs of these users. In the two sections, HTML Code and Documents you will find information on our requirements.
