REL 2012018 How Prepared are Subgroups of Texas Students for College-Level Reading? Applying a Lexile®-Based Approach
Many students graduate from high school unprepared for the rigorous reading required in entry-level college and career work. This brief builds on a recent report (Wilkins et al. 2010) that used the Lexile measure (a method for measuring the reading difficulty of prose text and the reading capability of individuals) to estimate the proportion of Texas grade 11 public school students in 2009 ready for entry-level college reading in English. The previous study examined the overall grade 11 Texas student population; this brief uses the same methodol-ogy to present similar readiness estimates for student subgroups as defined by 10 character-istics that Texas uses for its state accountability system. An Excel® tool was created to enable school administrators to more easily compare the preparation of grade 11 students to read entry-level English textbooks from University of Texas (UT) system schools with that of stu-dents overall or selected subgroups of students statewide.

WWC IRHSMCP10 Core-Plus Mathematics
Core-Plus Mathematics is a four-year curriculum meant to replace the traditional mathematics program. Courses integrate strands of algebra and functions, statistics and probability, geometry and trigonometry, and discrete mathematics. The WWC reviewed 17 studies that investigated the effects of Core-Plus Mathematics on high school students. One study meets WWC evidence standards with reservations. This study included 1,050 high school students in 11 schools in multiple states. Based on its review of the research, the WWC found Core-Plus Mathematics to have potentially positive effects on mathematics achievement for high school students.

NCES 2010338 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 Base Year to Second Follow-up Public-use Data
These data are a Public-Use version of the ELS:2002/06 Restricted-use Base Year to Second Follow-up data (NCES 2008-346) released previously. These data can be downloaded using a new “EDAT” web application on the NCES website. The application allows users to download the data files they need for research in one of six statistical programming languages and then select the variables they need to perform that research. ELS:2002/06 is a nationally representative longitudinal survey of 16,200 high school sophomores in 2002, who were interviewed again in 2004 when most were seniors, and again in 2006 when many were sophomores in college or in the workforce. Data are included on the academic and other aspects of the environment of the schools in which these students were enrolled, as well as peer and parental influences. At the college level, data on the extent of college search, expectations, and choice processes prior to college enrollment, as well as information about subsequent pathways into and out of various types of postsecondary institutions are included. The initial entry of these youth into adulthood is then traced with respect to employment, living patterns, family formation, volunteerism, and military service. The last data collection in the survey will be in 2012, when most of the sample members who went to college will have left college and entered the workforce.
