Compiled for the beginning genealogist, this selected list of references includes introductory books about do genealogical research and compiling a family history in the United States. They discuss original, printed, and microfilmed sources, both primary and secondary, that are essential for conducting that type of research. They also cover useful search strategies. For assistance with advanced, specialized, and foreign genealogical research, one should consult specialized bibliographies, or a reference librarian in the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room at the Library of Congress, or in other libraries or archives in which one is doing research. All books listed in this finding aid may be found in the reference collection of the Local History and Genealogy Reading Room.
