Model-based Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) for Counties and States

The Census Bureau's Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE) program produces estimates of health insurance coverage for states and all counties. In July 2005, SAHIE released the first nation-wide set of county-level estimates on the number of people without health insurance coverage for all ages and those under 19 years old. In August 2012, SAHIE released 2010 estimates of health insurance coverage by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, and income categories at the state-level and by age, sex, and income categories at the county-level.

There were errors made during the processing of the county-level 2009 SAHIE data, posted in October 2011, that required their removal from the website until a corrected version can be posted. The revised data are to be re-released by October 31, 2012.

The poverty universe used during the 2009 processing was incorrect. The appropriate parts of the group quarters population were not excluded from the universe. Thus, this revision will most affect county estimates where a large portion of the county population resides in group quarters, such as prisons, barracks, and dorms.

There were no errors in the processing of any of the SAHIE data prior to 2009, for 2010, or for the state-level 2009 data, therefore, no revisions will be posted for these data.
