E3: Economy, Energy and Environment

E3: Economy, Energy, Environment Logo

E3 brings together federal agencies, states and local communities for a broad discussion on how to connect respective programs to deliver responsive, coordinated solutions in a manufacturing environment. The E3 program facilitates collaboration among groups with common interests and a common agenda. E3 focuses on strengthening small to medium sized American manufacturers, which represent the largest proportion of the manufacturing sector. State and local communities use the E3 framework to help boost local economies to achieve their sustainability goals.

The topic of sustainability often centers on the triple bottom line of economic considerations, social responsibility and the environment. In these challenging times, more and more manufacturers are adopting sustainability into their overall business strategies. They understand how sustainable business practices reduce waste, improve the efficiency of their operations and position their firms to be more competitive in the global marketplace. Small- to- medium sized manufacturers, however, often lack information to integrate practical, sustainable approaches in their operations.

And that is where E3 can help: A joint collaboration among five U.S. federal agencies: the Department of Commerce (DOC), the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Department of Labor (DOL), the Department of Energy (DOE), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), E:3 pulls the agencies' resources and expertise together, and works directly with local utilities, local government and communities to help small- and medium-sized manufacturers. Green Suppliers Network

Green Suppliers Network logo The Green Suppliers Network is a component of the E3 Initiative. The venture involves industry, the U.S. EPA, and the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology's Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST MEP), a leading provider of technical assistance to manufacturers. Green Suppliers Network works with large manufacturers to engage their small and medium-sized suppliers in low-cost technical reviews that focus on process improvement and waste minimization. EPA provides program support.

Technical reviews are coordinated through NIST MEP. Teaching suppliers about "Lean and Clean" manufacturing techniques can help them to increase energy efficiency, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimize resources to eliminate waste. The result: companies with more effective processes and products, higher profits and fewer environmental impacts. You can be next! Are you a supply company? Get more information!
