New GSA Mobility and Telework Policy a Model For Federal Agencies

Just over six months ago, a group of GSA employees from around the country got together – some in a conference room, but many participating virtually – with a singular goal:  take telework to the next level, where anywhere, anytime work for virtually all employees could become a reality.  That reality is now, as GSA has signed a groundbreaking mobility and telework policy, lauded as a model that other federal agencies can use to accelerate their own telework initiatives.

The new telework policy – GSA’s first in three years –significantly advances how mobility and telework will be applied across the agency.  Among its key changes, the new policy makes nearly every GSA employee eligible for telework and explicity defines some of the new work modes — such as hot desking, hoteling, and desk sharing — that are becoming more prevalent in the workplace.  Most importantly, the new policy empowers our entire workforce to be mobile and agile for the 21st Century economy.

Getting to this point wasn’t easy.  It required the dedicated hard work of GSA’s Telework Program Management Office, empowered by GSA leadership to move quickly, and the cooperation of unions representing GSA employees.  But GSA has taken its leadership role in telework seriously, and hopes that other federal agencies can learn and benefit from its experiences.

The new policy, and the stories behind its development, are readily accessible on GSA’s Telework page.
