GSA Gives Wounded Warriors Emergency Room on Wheels

A joint effort between the Department of the Army and the U.S. General Services Administration means better care for wounded military members.  The patient evacuation vehicle transports injured soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines from the flight line at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. The specially designed vehicle is the result of GSA team members and Army medical personnel working together to create an emergency room on wheels. Among the vehicle's features is a special suspension to provide an ultrasmooth ride.

The vehicle has been in operation since June 2008. In that time it has made several trips a week to transport both ambulatory and nonambulatory patients from as far away as Iraq and Afghanistan.

“I’m proud that our team was able to have a hand in the creation of this specialized vehicle,” says Commissioner James A. Williams, of GSA's Federal Acquisition Service. “We are especially proud of the work we are able to do in support of our wounded warriors.”

The vehicle can carry up to 28 patients at a time, more than three times the capacity of medical evacuation buses. The semitrailer-sized vehicle can also be used to support crisis operations in the Washington, DC metro area.
