GSA Greens by Example, Celebrates Earth Day

Video Length: 52 seconds

In Washington, GSA joined forces with two of its neighboring agencies — the U.S. Department of Interior and the Office of Personnel Management — to sponsor a special program that included exhibits from government and nonprofit groups and vendors, all involved in preserving our earth’s environment through sustainable initiatives. GSA Administrator Martha N. Johnson joined OPM Director John Berry to tour the exhibits, and meet with employees and neighbors from the surrounding community.

All around the country, GSA led and participated in events to celebrate Earth Day. In New York City, GSA partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to sponsor an event that featured more than 20 exhibits focusing on sustainability and green initiatives. In addition, GSA included the children from the Fedkids Child Care Center at 26 Federal Plaza in the celebration. The youngsters planted seeds in the planters at Federal Plaza in an effort to teach them more about the life cycles of plants and the environmental benefits of growing plants in urban locations such as New York City. GSA employees in San Francisco participated in an Earth Day event at the recently completed San Francisco Federal Building, Silver-certified in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design by the U.S. Green Building Council. The event included presentations covering future work environments, federal leadership in sustainability, and health and wellness.

GSA has been a leading proponent of sustainable building design and management since the 1970s. Today, GSA has a significant role in promoting sustainability throughout the federal government, in workspaces, the supply chain, and in the federal fleet, and in helping federal agencies meeting their mandates under the President Barack Obama’s Executive Order on sustainability.
