Government Web and Media Conference Highlights Newest Tools and Collaboration

Video Length: 1 minute 06 seconds

GSA's Web Manager University Conference kicked off as more than 500 attendees packed a downtown Washington hotel to learn the latest information about new media's growing importance, citizen engagement, and collaboration between citizens and government.

In her welcoming remarks via video calling technology, GSA Administrator Martha N. Johnson outlined her vision for GSA as a resource to the federal community to develop practical strategies and real solutions for transparency and the use of new media tools in outreach to the public. Johnson also stressed the need for collaboration across all levels of government.

"The real challenge is collaboration, and I am eager to connect with our customers," said Johnson. "It's important to listen deeply to our customers' needs and find out more about collaboration and what tools we can use."

In the main plenary session, GSA Office of Citizen Services Associate Administrator David McClure participated in a new media panel discussion with Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra, and Macon Phillips, Special Assistant to the President and White House Director of New Media. McClure highlighted an overview of practical open government strategies and the importance of agencies using governmentwide solutions. He also emphasized building strategies for transparency and the use of new media tools.

The sold-out event's plenary sessions included discussion of such topics as GSA's Federal Center for New media and Citizen Engagement, 10 management truths for the web age, and getting serious about customer service.

The two-day event represents the largest gathering of federal, state, and local government web and new media professionals in the country. It features visionaries from within government, as well as executives from private-sector companies such as Amazon, Starbucks, and Craigslist.
