GSA Champions Initiatives Promoting Sustainability, Open Government and Cost Savings at FedScoop Conference

August 20, 2010 Top decision makers from the federal government and IT community heard from senior GSA leaders on the agency’s expanding government role in sustainability, lowering the cost of government through green IT and smart buildings, and encouraging citizen participation through contests and challenges. "Sustainability in technology is not just about green IT. It is about IT for green. It is about using technology in a way that you make smart investments that will advance your overall sustainability agenda," said GSA CIO Casey Coleman, who provided the closing keynote at the FedScoop Lowering Cost of Government with Technology Summit in Washington. Bev Godwin, Director for New Media and Citizen Engagement, moderated a panel of best practices using challenges and contests to engage citizens. "GSA is taking citizen engagement to next level of co-creation by tapping the American spirit of creativity," said Godwin. "We are accelerating new ideas and innovation as President Obama asked government to engage citizens to accelerate innovation and solve tough problems." Ed O'Hare, Assistant Commissioner, Federal Acquisition Service, Office of Integrated Technology Services, and Sonny Bhagowalia, Deputy Associate Administrator for the Office of Citizen Services and Information Technology, participated in a panel on cloud computing and lessons learned. Ed and Sonny discussed current GSA efforts to implement cloud computing strategies and technologies to make them safe, secure and at reasonable cost. |
