GSA Helps Connect Government to the Public it Serves

September 7, 2010

Helping the entire government be more open and participatory, the U.S. General Services Administration today joined with White House officials to launch the GSA-created challenge.gov website.

The site, developed by GSA at no cost to other federal agencies, is a one-stop shop on the Web that connects the unique ideas of individuals from around the country to various government challenges and contests.

“GSA continues to help the administration move toward a more open, citizen-centered government by providing tools that simplify the engagement process for both agencies and citizens,” said Associate Administrator Dave McClure of GSA’s Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies.

On Challenge.gov, the public can search the multitude of challenges and contests, which range from simple to extremely complex, offered by government departments and agencies. The ideas generated by the public are then shared throughout an online community of problem-solvers while at the same time competing for prizes and recognition.

The site was officially unveiled today to much fanfare at the Gov 2.0 Summit in Washington, D.C. Bev Godwin, GSA’s Director for the Center of New Media, turned on the site during a presentation on how GSA is helping harness the innovative spirit of America.

Challenge.gov is part of President Barack Obama’s call for government to be more open and participatory. GSA is helping to lead the way in the effort with the creation of Challenge.gov and other tools and best practices that are helping the government tap into the creative ideas of the public in tackling our nation’s most pressing problems.
