Guidance from EPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: Preventing Pedicure Foot Spa Infections

Did You Know...?

- A dust mask does not protect against toxic chemical vapors.

- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) should be requested for all materials, kept in the shop, and shared with all employees.

- Some HVAC systems bring in some outside air, diluting shop vapors. To more effectively minimize breathing in chemicals, shops should consider use of the following:

  • a ventilated table with dust and charcoal filters
  • a ceiling-mounted or a wall-mounted exhaust vent

Developed in collaboration with nail salons and other partners, this practical guide, Protecting the Health of Nail Salon Workers (PDF) (21 pp., 1M, About PDF), can help workers and nail-salon owners make their salons safer workplaces. The guide includes easy-to-use checklists with advice on topics such as proper gloves, masks and handling of products. The guide's non-technical language will help workers understand product ingredients and how to prevent overexposure to those that present potential health risks.
