Colorado

The Colorado Coalition Against Tuberculosis (CCAT), which includes partners from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Denver Metro TB clinic, and RESULTS, is hosting the 4th Annual “Stop TB Trot” 5k run/walk. This event will promote awareness of tuberculosis infection and disease in Colorado and around the world. The event is a fundraiser to help underserved patients in the metro area by providing such things as temporary housing, food, and transportation while they are on treatment.

Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is a difficult disease to treat and manage. Multiple providers and the local and state health departments must form a team partnership for successful treatment to completion. Drs. Sabrina Roberts and Jonathan Fine from Norwalk Hospital in Connecticut will discuss a case that presented several difficult management issues including thoracic surgery. Kentucky

The KY TB Prevention and Control Program requested a proclamation from Governor Beshear declaring March as TB Awareness Month in KY.  Physicians, clinicians, nurses and other health professionals across KY will participate in the first of a two part webinar entitled Treatment of TB Disease – First Line Therapy, presented by Jerry Jean Stambaugh, Pharm D, Director of Pharmacy, A.G. Holley Hospital. TB Awareness information will be on display for a day in the capital annex; a press release will be developed and disseminated to media sources throughout Kentucky. The TB Program is promoting a “Wear a Braided Ribbon” campaign on March 23. Local health departments have displayed posters, are planning educational booths and have developed articles for newsletters.

Annual TB Cohort Review and TB Educational Update

Proclamation of “New Mexico Tuberculosis Day” on March 30, 2012 by Governor Susana Martinez will be presented by Secretary of Health, Catherine D. Oregon

The Public Health Division of the Oregon Health Society has invited Kevin L. Winthrop, MD, MPH (Oregon TB Control Medical Consultant and Assistant Professor of Infectious Diseases, Oregon Health & Science University) to be their keynote speaker at their World TB Day Webinar. The title of his presentation is “Anti-TNF and other immunosuppressive therapies: Screening and preventing TB”. Patients treated with TNFα blockers are at increased risk for developing serious infections. Tuberculosis disease is one of the complications which can result from this therapy.

The intended audience for this webinar includes: infection control staff, clinicians, local health departments, and correctional facility medical staff.

Tuberculosis activities are planned throughout Pennsylvania during the month of March. Some of the events scheduled to take place in the lobby of the Pennsylvania Health and Welfare building include: a TB awareness electronic display; an exhibit case of TB memorabilia and pamphlets; and, on March 23rd, display tables will be staffed by the TB Program to provide brochures, posters and TB trivia. In Celebration of World TB Day, The Texas Department of State Health Services in partnership with US-Mexico Border Health Commission, CDC Quarantine and Migration Health, Binational Health Councils, and Servicios de Salud de Chihuahua will host a Binational TB Forum in Marfa, Texas. The purpose of the forum is to increase TB awareness, prevention, and control. Virginia’s TB Control and Prevention Program is sponsoring a videoconference program on Friday, March 23 from 12:30–2:00 PM to recognize World TB Day. The agenda will feature release of 2011 TB surveillance data, a presentation on the new regimen for treatment of LTBI and discussion of the statewide combined achievement on 6 cohort review indicators. To commemorate World TB Day, the Washington State Tuberculosis Advisory Council, Firland Foundation, and Seattle BioMed will host "Come Together as a Community to STOP TB!" This educational event provides an opportunity for the public to learn how TB affects individuals, communities, and collective resources. Participants will join in small group discussions to learn more about topics such as: "Emergence of Totally Drug-Resistant TB", "Media’s Involvement in Covering TB Issues", and the "Study of Local Clusters." Also being offered is a unique opportunity to tour Seattle BioMed’s state-of-the art infectious disease labs and perform a hands-on experiment related to TB.

On March 22, 2012, Public Health-Seattle & King County, Tuberculosis Control will provide a panel presentation highlighting case management of TB cases using MDR TB as the focal point. A narrative case scenario will expand to contact investigation and community and state level impact will be followed through the case management/team approach. Presenters will give insight into the particular challenges and practice expertise of their role. The client story will be based upon an actual situation with modification to de-identify.

Wisconsin

Public Health – Madison & Dane County, in partnership with the Wisconsin TB Program, is hosting a Tuberculosis Summit on Friday, March 23, 2012. The TB Summit is a full day of presentations, case studies, and discussions. Topics include extrapulmonary TB case studies, the new 12-week LTBI treatment, isolation and control, pediatric TB, and social, cultural, and economic challenges. The WI State TB Program will discuss statewide resources and epidemiology. Speakers include local clinicians and physicians from Heartland National TB Center and the Denver TB Program.

We are developing a TB banner that will be used at various locations including Algoma Public Health’s Heath Promotion Center. We are also creating a short video on TB skin testing/reading. Malaysia

There will be a National TB Symposium that will begin on March 24th and end at 3pm on March 25th, 2012. Two speakers from the WHO WPRO regional office and one speaker from India will be presenting. They will discuss different issues of concern for doctors and para-medics including: immunology, HIV/TB, childhood TB, role of NGOs, TB in high risk groups, TB in immigrant populations, etc. This event will be officiated by the Minister of Health and the Director General of Health. There will also be a concurrent event for the public on the same day. On the night of March 24th, a gala dinner will be held by the TB NGO of Malaysia (MAPTB). Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former prime minister of Malaysia, will be the special guest of honor.

Nepal

HDCS TEAM Hospital Dadeldhura, a 45 bed full service hospital located in the Far Western hilly region of Nepal, is partnering with the Dadeldhura District Health Office in order to promote community awareness of TB. We are holding a “Stop TB In My Lifetime” 5k race, followed by a family gathering on our hospital grounds where, in addition to hosting children’s activities and refreshments, education regarding the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of TB will be presented to the community. Additionally, the Health Office and hospital are partnering together to purchase N95 masks for hospital employees to use when providing care to MDR TB patients at our facility.
