Iowa's Response to Obesity

  • Eat and Play the 5-2-1 Way is a pediatric health care provider toolkit that includes patient education materials promoting healthy eating and physical activity.

  • The Nutrition Environment Measurement Survey-Vending was used to evaluate the quality of vending machine selections available throughout the State Capital Complex. Data will be used to help reach the goal of a minimum of 30% of vending machine items being considered “healthy.”

  • The Worksite Wellness Toolkit is a resource designed to assist small businesses in developing sustainable worksite wellness programs.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among Iowa's adults age 18 and over 1

  • 65.4% of adults were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 28.4% of adults were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity

2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) adolescent obesity data is not available, as Iowa’s overall institutional response rate was below 60%, the minimum necessary for statewide reporting.

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among Iowa's children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 2

  • 17.2% were overweight (85th to <95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 14.7% were obese (>95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
