New York's Response to Obesity

  • Creating Healthy Places is a 5-year initiative designed to implement prescribed policy, system and environmental change strategies to increase physical activity, reduce sedentary behavior, and increase access to and consumption of healthy foods.

  • Eat Well Play Hard in Child Care Settings is an intervention that provides training for child care staff and a curriculum of lessons for children and parents on healthy eating, increased physical activity and reducing TV/screen time.

Adult Overweight and Obesity

Among New York's adults age 18 and over 1

  • 60.6% of adults were overweight, with a Body Mass Index of 25 or greater
  • 23.9% of adults were obese, with a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater

Adolescent Overweight and Obesity

Among New York's adolescents in grades 9 through 12 2

  • 15.6% were overweight (> 85th and < 95th percentiles for BMI by age and sex)
  • 11.0% were obese (> 95th percentile for BMI by age and sex)

Child Overweight and Obesity

Among New York's children aged 2 years to less than 5 years 3

  • 17.0% were overweight (85th to <95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
  • 14.5% were obese (>95th percentile BMI-for-Age)
