CDC STD Employee Development Guide (EDG)

The CDC STD Employee Development Guide (EDG) is a recommended source for orientation material on STD transmission and control and is only available on CD-ROM.  The EDG, designed as a self-study course to give new staff members a comprehensive background in STD intervention, is presented in a modular format and includes separate student and supervisor sections.  Successful completion of the EDG is prerequisite to staff participation in the Introduction to STD Intervention (ISTDI) course; a typical orientation plan for new employees usually requires six to eight weeks to complete.  It is strongly recommended the modules be studied in sequential order to provide the student an appropriate learning progression on STD/HIV infection, transmission and control, although they may be studied out of order if necessary.

Student Section:  The student section is composed of 15 modules, a glossary and a comprehensive test.  Each module consists of an Introduction, Key Learning Points, Content, and Module Test.  Individual modules include STD Prevention and Control, Infectious Disease Characteristics and Human Anatomy, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Syphilis, HIV Infection and AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, Disease Investigation through Case Management, STD Interview Activities, STD Referral Activities, Visual Case Analysis, Infection Control, STD Case Management Forms, and Laboratory Procedures.

Supervisor Section:  The supervisor section provides materials to assist in the orientation of the new employee and includes all information contained in the student section as well as a sample orientation plan for new DIS, suggested activities to accompany the EDG including post-ISTDI activities, and access to answer keys.  The supervisor section and all module test answer keys are password protected.

Copies of the STD Employee Development Guide-CD and the supervisor and answer key passwords are available by contacting Sheila McKenzie in the Program Development and Quality Improvement Branch (PDQIB) at (404) 639-8357 or by e-mail:  stdtraining@cdc.gov
