World TB Day Activities 2010:

California

The Los Angeles County (LAC) TB Control Program is planning an educational symposium targeting the private medical community in one of our highest incidence areas, the San Gabriel Valley.  The conference will cover TB epidemiology, the reporting and discharging of TB patients, the partnership between the private and public sectors in controlling TB, and updates on TB diagnosis and treatment.  Additionally, an article has been submitted for publication in various medical association newsletters, along with the LAC Department of Public Health’s newsletter, Rx for Prevention.  Finally, the LAC Board of Supervisors is anticipated to issue a proclamation in honor of World TB Day.

There will be a World TB Day event at Ventanilla de Salud (Window of Health).  This is a health education and referral service located in the lobby of the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. There will be an information display/table, periodic announcements (one per hour) in the lobby and questions and answers for the public. CureTB staff will be holding training for Ventanilla de Salud staff, on how to refer people with TB issues traveling to and from the United States and Mexico.

Through the project, people with TB are provided cameras to document their journey and dispel some of the myths and stigma surrounding TB. Colorado

The Colorado Coalition Against Tuberculosis (CCAT), which includes partners from the Denver Metro TB clinic, American Lung Association, Tri-County Health Department, RESULTS and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, is hosting the 2nd Annual “Stop TB Trot” 5k run/walk.  The purpose of the event is to promote awareness of tuberculosis infection and disease in Colorado, and around the world. The event is a fundraiser to help underserved patients in the metro area, by providing such things as temporary housing, food and transportation, while they are on treatment.

Connecticut

Illinois

Metropolitan Chicago Tuberculosis Coalition of Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago (RHAMC) will host a day-long event, entitled “A Disease Often Forgotten: Recognizing Health Disparities in TB.” There will be distinguished guests from City, County, and State Health Departments, as well as RHAMC. The main speaker is Romel Lacson, founder of Amaya-Lacson TB Photo Voice project. This event will include round tables on: Contact Investigations (how to find lost cases) and Quarantine/ Immigration process.  The panel discussions on homeless shelters, diabetes, methadone clinics, dialysis centers, and state jails will focus on their experiences with TB Past, Present and Future.  There will be an appreciation ceremony for TB workers and advocates, talent show, raffles and information booths.  CEUs will be offered.

New York City

North Carolina

10th Annual TB Symposium: Understanding TB Risks & Strategizing Solutions – Clinicians who diagnose and treat tuberculosis patients benefit from annual clinical updates. Annual updates allow clinicians to maintain standard of care to all patients. An educational program is needed to implement protocol based on policy and treatment guidelines from the N.C. TB Control Policy Manual, and recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, American Thoracic Society and Infectious Diseases Society of America. Virginia

The Virginia Department of Health will sponsor a video conference for local health departments across the state.  The program includes an epidemiology update, and a presentation by Eric Houpt, MD, University of Virginia.  Five local health districts will present tuberculosis case studies/activities. Prince William County will share a local television show that they produced in Spanish, which will air every Friday in March.  The show features an outreach worker discussing the signs and symptoms of TB, and informing the public of where they can receive treatment.
