Arizona

The Arizona Department of Health Services TB Control Program, in partnership with Heartland National TB Center, will host a training session on TB in the Correctional Setting. This course targets correctional health care staff and local health department personnel, especially public health nurses, who work with inmates with, or at risk, of TB. The training follows a TB Cohort Review course to be held on March 23rd by ADHS and Heartland. This one day course will cover the Cohort Review process for local health department staff.

California

The L.A. County TB Control Program and the American Lung Association are re-invigorating the TB Coalition of Los Angeles County which was formed several years ago. The new coalition now includes community based organizations that serve populations at highest risk for developing TB infection and TB disease. World TB Day will feature the kick-off meeting of the coalition, including a networking luncheon and a two hour business meeting. The coalition was established to maintain a communication network and information exchange between all agencies involved in the prevention and treatment of TB in Los Angeles County. It was also established to increase awareness of TB among the public and elected officials, to enhance fiscal and political support for these efforts.

Colorado

The Colorado Coalition Against Tuberculosis (CCAT), which includes partners from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Denver Metro TB clinic, and RESULTS is hosting the 3rd Annual “Stop TB Trot” 5k run/walk to promote awareness of LTBI and TB disease in Colorado and around the world. The event is a fundraiser to help underserved patients in the metro area by providing such things as temporary housing, food and transportation while they are on treatment.

District of Columbia

Obstacles to Achieve Results: Tuberculosis in the 21st Century

A panel discussion and tuberculosis (TB) tools exhibit in recognition of World Tuberculosis Day will take place on March 24.  TB is the second leading infectious disease killer of adults worldwide and 1.7 million individuals died from the disease in 2009.  The panel will address the burden of TB in the U.S. and around the globe, the U.S. role in implementing the Global Plan to Stop TB, as well as successes and challenges in prevention, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis. Panelists include: Joel Spicer, Senior Strategist Stop TB Partnership; Payam Nahid, M.D., Associate Professor, University of California San Francisco; Christy Hanson, Ph.D., Chief of the Infectious Disease Division, USAID and David Rochkind, Photojournalist.  Jon Sawyer, Executive Director, Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will moderate this event.

A Tuberculosis Tools Exhibit will follow the panel discussion and will include the GeneXpert diagnostic test, equipment used in smear microscopy, information about promising TB drug regimens, technology used for vaccine clinical research and a demonstration of the free educational website (www.tbepidemic.org), EPIDEMIC: TB in the Global Community.  Experts will be on hand to answer questions.

Kentucky

All eight county LHD within the Barren River District have been given posters and TB education pamphlets to display and make available for public.  Middle schools and high schools within the Barren River District Health Dept. (BRDHD) area are being encouraged to promote World TB Day in Health classes on March 24.  Posters and educational information are available upon request. BRDHD School Nurses are displaying posters and educational information in their schools.  Businesses within BRDHD area have been encouraged to promote World TB Day by displaying posters and educational material for their employees.  Communicable Disease Staff and TB Control Officer will be doing multiple interviews with the media.  Working with City/County government officials to officially declare World TB Day March 24, 2011.

This year's theme is “TB: What We Know, What Lies Below”. Throughout the day local, national and international issues will be discussed.  The keynote speaker is Sundari Mase, MD, Chief, Medical Team, FSEB/DTBE/CDC. There are two tracks: Technical and Community Health.  John Nawrocki from our state laboratory will discuss “Comparing Rapid Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests for Detection of TB In Sputum” as part of the Technical Track; Cellestis will also conduct a presentation.  The Community Health Track will assist the Metropolitan Chicago Tuberculosis Coalition (MCTC) and its partners in furthering TB prevention and elimination; a RESULTS’ representative will participate.

New York

In commemoration of World TB Day, this conference will bring together over 200 health care providers and TB experts to address TB control efforts in New York City as well as cover testing and outreach strategies with TB suspects and patients. This conference is open to providers and health care workers who manage patients at risk for or diagnosed with TB. Topics will include: epidemiology of TB in New York City, prioritization of high-risk groups, hospital discharge planning, and diagnostic testing. North Carolina

11th Annual TB Symposium – This symposium is designed for clinicians who diagnose and treat tuberculosis patients. Healthcare providers benefit from annual updates to maintain standards of care based on policy and treatment guidelines from the North Carolina Tuberculosis Control Program, which are based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Thoracic Society (ATS), and the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Physicians and other providers interested in TB control, treatment and research are encouraged to attend this free symposium at the Duke University Medical Center or via interactive teleconference at six additional satellite sites across the state.

Additionally, two interactive games will be available for all interested participants. The objective of each game will be to spell out words related to TB. Prizes will be given to winners. There will be training on CDC TB Module #2 for TB Control staff and interested community members. Houston TB Control will present on the introduction and use of QuantiFERON TB blood testing in the community. A local TB expert will give a talk on co-morbidity concerns with TB patients. The day-long celebration will also feature awards for exceptional community partners, testimony from a former TB patient, raffles and skits.

Virginia

Virginia’s TB Control Program will sponsor a statewide videoconference for local health districts. Topics include sharing the state’s 2010 tuberculosis data, a presentation on IGRA tests, and the specimen submission process for the T-SPOT-TB test. Tuberculosis information will be featured on the VDH website’s home page. Some local health districts have activities planned. Eastern Shore District staff will distribute educational information on placing and reading PPDs to new providers. Fairfax District will offer educational programs and display materials in the main lobby of the health department. Cumberland Plateau District will offer free TB screening during the week of March 24th, 2011.

International World TB Day Events

Namibia

The National TB and Leprosy Program (NTLP) in Namibia is hosting month-long events to commemorate World TB Day and to raise awareness.  A STOP TB Partnership road show is scheduled to crisscross the country in March. Teams will be traveling across the country during the build-up to World TB Day starting on 7 March, 2011, meeting communities and spreading TB messages. In particular, focus will be on mobile communities and cross-border collaboration.  The final ceremony will be held in Rundu on Thu 24 March, 2011. This town has been chosen for its relatively high TB burden and its proximity to border communities. The main event will include speeches by Namibian and Angolan leaders, performances by local musicians, and TB screening opportunities.  A documentary along with other media and publicity stories are planned to document the road show and raise awareness about the TB situation in the country.
