Metronidazole Shortage

CDC was recently notified of difficulties in obtaining metronidazole tablets. Metronidazole is a recommended treatment for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis.  It is also an optional therapy in the treatment of pelvic inflammatory disease. Other CDC recommended regimens for bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis are listed below and outlined in the 2010 STD Treatment Guidelines along with additional alternative regimens. Bacterial vaginosis


Metronidazole gel 0.75% one full applicator intravaginally once a day for 5 days

OR

Clindamycin cream 2% one full applicator intravaginally at bedtime for 7 days

Trichomoniasis


Tinidazole 2 g orally in a single dose
