BodyWorks evaluation

An independent pilot evaluation from 2006-2008 by Altarum Institute looked at the impact of BodyWorks on awareness, knowledge, attitudes and practices of parents and adolescent girls in relation to physical activity and nutrition. The evaluation found that BodyWorks was associated with significant gains in parents' knowledge about nutrition and physical activity and greater self-efficacy to set realistic nutrition goals for their family, plan weekly physical activities for their family, and help their daughters change eating habits. Eighty-five percent of daughters agreed with their parent that, after participating in Bodyworks program their parent helped them to make healthier food choices. Over 70% of the daughter/parent pairs also agreed that the parent had begun cooking with less fat after completing the program.

With positive evidence from the pilot evaluation, OWH has contracted with Shattuck and Associates to conduct an independent, multi-component evaluation of the BodyWorks program. The study will include: a larger sample, boys as well as girls, participants who received the program in Spanish as well as in English, and a follow-up 2 months post-intervention.

Currently there are two online surveys available for BodyWorks trainers and parents/caregivers.

  • Online Survey for Trainers:We are surveying BodyWorks trainers to find out more about their experiences with the program. The survey will take about 20 minutes. Look for a postcard and an email inviting you to participate, or visit www.surveymonkey.com/s/BodyWorksTrainers.
  • Online Survey for Parents/Caregiver: We are surveying parents/caregivers who participated in BodyWorks since 2010 to find out about their experiences with the program. The survey will take about 10 minutes. Look for a postcard and an email inviting parents and caregivers to participate. Please encourage parents/caregivers that you know to participate. They can visit: www.surveymonkey.com/s/BodyWorksParents.

Please contact Shattuck and Associates by email at bodyworks@shattuckandassociates.com or toll free at 1-888-829-1777 if you have any questions about the current evaluation.
