On June 6, the Department of Health and Human Services launched HealthData.gov at HealthData Palooza 3. In September, we began working on Phase 2 of development for HealthData.gov. Patch 1.1 focuses almost entirely on one of our key users – internal data publishers here at HHS. We greatly appreciate the feedback from our beta users, especially the team at Administration for Children, Youth, and Families (ACF) and National Institute of Health (NIH).

Future patches will be focused on researchers and the scientific community, as well as application developers and entrepreneurs. If there are improvements you’d like to see made to HealthData.gov, let us know on our Ideas page: http://www.healthdata.gov/ideas.

HealthData.gov Patch 1.1

Publishing Workflow
Many improvements have been made from our minimally viable product (MVP) release in June, including:

-        Publishers can now submit their dataset submissions electronically online, and have their data published in a matter of hours

-        Publishers who need to submit almost identical datasets with very minor differences, can now “clone” a dataset, effectively copying an old dataset and renaming it, thus saving them significant time.

-        Lowered the number of required fields for metadata submissions from 63 down to 5, significantly reducing the burden on dataset publishers. Publishers can still provide up to 25 optional pieces of information to improve the metadata associated with our datasets.

-        All content types (datasets, ideas, questions, etc.) are now managed at the operating division level, empowering publishers across HHS to submit and manage all of their own content.

-        Workflow now allows for multiple roles at the agency level, providing maximum flexibility for authors and editors.

-        All dataset submissions now include full commenting functionality, allowing for significantly improved communication for all members of the publishing workflow.

-        Many usability improvements have been made, including improved login, better explanatory text for dataset fields, additional resource fields

-        Publishers can now easily attest to the privacy/confidentiality and data quality requirements for their datasets, complying with all agency and OMB requirements

API

-        Author field is now properly populating.
-        Developers can now properly search by agency ID

-        Navigation tabs on the site now stay properly highlighted to indicate your presence in a specific area of the site.
-        Fixed problem with datasets publishing to our data portal at http://hub.healthdata.gov
