African American men are disproportionately impacted by cardiovascular disease (CVD), with one of the risk factors being uncontrolled high blood pressure. Public health programs that desire to develop, implement, expand, or evaluate interventions targeting African American men can use these documents to gain additional insight and direction.

Arthritis as a Potential Barrier to Physical Activity among Adults With Heart Disease- United States, 2005 and 2007
The results indicated that, for these 2 years combined, arthritis affected 57.4% of adults with heart disease (HD), compared with 27.4% of adults in the general population. Among adults with HD, the likelihood of physical inactivity was 30% greater compared with that of persons with HD but without arthritis, when adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education level, and body mass index. By sex, males had a higher prevalence of HD only and a slightly higher prevalence of both conditions.

Mortality from Major Cardiovascular Diseases: United States, 2007
For all categories of major cardiovascular disease deaths shown, males had a higher age-adjusted death rate than females. The death rate for males dying from major cardiovascular diseases is 42 percent higher than the rate for females.

Vital Signs: Prevalence, Treatment, and Control of Hypertension - United States, 1999-2002 and 2005-2008
During 2005-2008, approximately 68 million (31%) U.S. adults aged ≥18 years had hypertension, and this prevalence has shown no improvement in the past decade. Less than half of those with hypertension have their condition controlled. Prevalence of treatment and control are even lower among persons who do not have a usual source of medical care, those who are not receiving regular medical care, and those who do not have health insurance.
