NSF is approved by the Department of Veteran Affairs as a Non-Paid Work Experience agency.
On November 9, 2009, President Obama signed Executive Order 13518 on the Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government. This order is designed to enhance employment opportunities for transitioning and disabled veterans within the Federal Government. This Order requires the establishment of a Veterans Employment Program (VEP) within the National Science Foundation (NSF) to be responsible for executing the requirements of the Veterans Employment Initiative. The VEP will engage NSF's workforce in the Veterans Employment Initiative, market NSF's support for the employment of veterans and military family members; facilitate initiatives to increase the veteran candidate pool for NSF careers; and educate HR professionals and hiring managers. Communication from Foundation leadership about the Initiative and the establishment of veterans' opportunities at NSF is critical to the successful creation and existence of this program.
