- The South Portico is featured in this week’s White House Wednesday photo, taken on February 16, 1952. We have previously looked at the South Portico in a variety of other posts, including week 39. Little renovation work was needed on the outside of the building, but there was a significant amount of construction done to the outside to make inside construction and renovation easier.

- Adlai Stevenson won the Democratic presidential nomination in 1952. At a campaign event in Michigan, Stevenson, seated on a stage, crossed one leg over the other to reveal a hole in the sole of his shoe, which seemed incongruous with his pu...t-together image. A photographer snapped a picture of the shoe, and it quickly became a symbol of Stevenson’s frugality. This button reproduces the shoe motif, and made an appearance in the 1956 campaign as well. The photographer who took the picture of Stevenson’s shoe won the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for journalism photography.See More

- While on a whistlestop campaign trip between Duluth and St. Paul, Minnesota on October 13, 1948, President Truman dictated this estimated tally of electoral votes to one of his aides, George Elsey. The "white" states are Democratic, the "black" ones Republican, and the "red" ones are States' Rights party. As it turned out, Truman was fairly accurate in his assessment!

- Today’s edition of White House Wednesday spotlights the White House pantry! In this photo, taken on January 23, 1952, the workmen are clearly in the home stretch of the renovation process. There is still work left to be done, things are starting to return to normal.
- In 1947, President Truman spent $10,000 adding a balcony to the back side of the White House. Many people decried the addition of the balcony, claiming that Truman would spend all of his time rocking on the porch instead of governing the co...untry. Truman stated that he added the porch to break up the disproportionate height of the columns in the back, and to shade the Blue Room, which allowed for the removal of unsightly awnings. This campaign button states that Truman would not get much use out of his balcony, since Dewey, of course, would win the election!See More

- In this week’s White House Wednesday photo, workmen are laying down new hardwood flooring in the State Dining Room. This photo, taken on January 23, 1952, demonstrates the progress made since the last photo we posted of the State Dining Room, which was taken in 1950.
- Recent research for a cataloging project has illuminated an interesting and unexpected story with this button. For many years, the museum staff believed that this button referred to Eddie Jacobson, Truman’s friend and former business partne...r who is widely credited with influencing Truman’s decision to recognize the state of Israel. Museum staff discovered a letter in our archives showing that a man named Eddie Phippen, a job seeker who claimed to be a friend of Truman’s, had personally had the buttons made. According to the letter, the Secret Service confiscated the buttons before many of them got out.See More
