    •  If you, like Buster Keaton, have served in the military, your personnel file is held at the National Archives at St. Louis (National Personnel Records Center) in St. Louis, Missouri. More than 34 million files are held in this new facility, filling 2.3 million cubic feet of records on 385,000 shelves. There are 6.2 billion feet of paper in the military records alone. This picture shows the building under construction in 2011. The shelves that are being installed are 29 feet high. About 600 full-time staff work in St. Louis. In 2011, the NPRC received 1,093,522 written requests for records, about 3,000 requests per day. • I have a question about how the military kept track of possible recruits after the draft was taken and before the individuals were called up. After the draft, many individuals moved from their address listed on their draft card to a new residence. How did the military find them? My question is specifically for the year 1917, when the USA was gearing up for WWI. Paper work had to be created to locate these individuals who moved from their previous residence. Is this paper work still in existence?

    • I am trying to locate a draft dodger during World War I. He filled out his draft card application in St. Louis City, Missouri; Precinct 18; Draft Board 13. He abandoned his wife in 1918, and moved from the St. Louis area. His name was Paul S. Hamil. He was born in the year 1888. His draft card was registered on June 5, 1917. The numbers 24-I-16A are stamped on the card. I’m hoping to locate any information on Paul S. Hamil via investigation by the military on his whereabouts. I guess technically he is not considered a draft dodger since he filled out the application. However, after that he hit the road and was never heard from again from his wife in St. Louis. Please advise me on the process. Thank you. Chris
