Biography

Diane Bild, M.D., M.P.H., is the Associate Director for the Prevention and Population Sciences Program (PPSP), Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute.

Dr. Bild graduated from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1976 with a B.A. in Honors Biology and received her M.D. from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1980. She trained in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee from 1980-1983. She was awarded a U.S. Public Health Service Epidemiology Training Program Fellowship in 1983, and received her M.P.H. in epidemiology at the University of Michigan in 1984. She then joined the Centers for Disease Control in the Division of Diabetes Control (which later became the Division of Diabetes Translation), where she first served as a fellow and later as a Medical Officer, focusing on macrovascular complications of diabetes.

In 1989, she joined the NHLBI’s Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Applications, where she served as a Medical Officer in the Epidemiology and Biometry Program and, in 2000, became the Scientific Group Leader for the Field Studies and Clinical Epidemiology SRG. She became Deputy Director of the Division in 2003 and Associate Director for PPSP in 2009. While at the NHLBI, she has worked primarily on large contract-funded multicenter epidemiology studies, including as Project Officer for the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study, the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS), and the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA). She currently serves as Project Officer for MESA and oversees a research portfolio of ~$250M in annual costs and a staff of 50 in three branches: the Epidemiology Branch, Clinical Applications and Prevention Branch, and the Women’s Health Initiative Branch. The portfolio includes studies in epidemiology, clinical trials of cardiovascular disease prevention, and health services research. Her professional interests include cardiovascular disease epidemiology and prevention, subclinical cardiovascular disease, ethnic differences in disease, and diabetes. She has authored or coauthored more than 70 publications in these areas.
