Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
Constructed about 1881 on the Margate waterfront, this seventy-five foot long wood and tin pachyderm is the last survivor of what one historian calls "zoomorphic architecture." Built as an architectural folly to attract home buyers to the area, it has become a favorite in the landscape of seaside New Jersey.

Lucy is doing well. The NJ SHPO granted a Tea 21 project and potential New Jersey Historic Trust funding to the Landmark. An ADA compliance ramp & an enlarged visitor's center are being designed by preservation architects, Westfield Architects.
