  • Hi Davie,

I always watch your videos and truly appreciate everything you do. I had a quick question regarding fishing this fly and CDC flies in general. Would you normally use floatant on a fly like this? I've heard CDC floats very well and doesn't need it. How would you go about fishing this fly?

    Thank you

    George

  • Hi George,

I always put a floatant on my CDC flies as they will float a lot longer and as long as you don't put too much on then you'll have no problems, once you catch a fish give the fly a good wash and then dry it with a piece of amadou or something similar and you'll keep catching until it gets too soggy then change it to another..I like to use mucilin silicone floatant which I have used all the time I have been fishing...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie,

Im pretty new to fly tying, but my skills are pretty good. I want to start selling a few simple patters, but i dont know what price i should make them. I was thinking around $1.25. Is that to much or to little?

  • Hi bassnbows,

I would think $1.25 is a good price especially for a CDC fly but you charge what you feel covers your time and materials. I wish you lots of luck but don't forget the fishing as it can be easy to be tying flies rather than fishing...All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie, I use UV Goo by Loon and even a good blob sets in about 1 second under the light. That tiny bit you used would set with a flash I reckon. Not that it matters at all, but with all your flies, you seem to expose them to the light for a very long time.

  • Hi vicweb1978,

I do know the resin sets really quick like you said but I feel it needs a little longer just incase, it's like anything new you need to keep convincing yourself that it works..

    All the best Davie

  • Thanks for the reply. I usually do all my tying at night so it ddoesn't really interfere. Thanks!

  • Hi troutbhoy1,

The ones I used were the very fine CDC feathers just above where the puffs would be on the bird so I would be happy to use both especially on smaller flies..I'm glad you liked the patterns I have tyed using the CDC...

    All the best Davie

  • Hi Davie,

I love your patterns especially the dry flies & particularly the CDC patterns, in regards to the type of CDC used on the CDC sparse dun are they the oiler puffs you use & if not have you ever used them for the wings?

  • Hi MrMarkysparky,

You're welcome..I use an acetone free nail varnish remover to keep my varnish from getting too thick by adding a small drop ever so often but you have to watch what one you buy as it has to be clear and not coloured as it can turn the varnish white..

    All the best Davie
