IOF Report: 80% of Patients with Fracture are Not Screened for Osteoporosis or Risk of Future Falls
Today, the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) released a new report, revealing approximately 80 percent of patients treated in clinics or hospitals following a fracture are not screened for osteoporosis or risk of future falls. Left untreated, these patients are at high risk of suffering secondary fractures and facing a future of pain, disfigurement, long-term disability and even early death. (Read More)
Vitamin C Actively Protects Against Osteoporosis
Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have shown for the first time in an animal model that vitamin C actively protects against osteoporosis, a disease affecting large numbers of elderly women and men in which bones become brittle and can fracture.  (Read More)
Osteoporosis Linked to Obesity; Latinas at Higher Risk

Obese Latinas, and obese women in general, may have an increased risk for developing osteoporosis, suggests a study.  The research, published in the Journal of Back and Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation, demonstrated that out of five test factors of body mass index, age, smoking, hypertension and exercise, obesity generated the highest increased risk for osteoporosis.  (Read More)

IOF Launches Global Vitamin D Map

An interactive global map of vitamin D status was recently launched by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), which presents a snapshot of vitamin D levels worldwide. The map and accompanying publication confirm that vitamin D insufficiency is a major public health issue in both the developing and industrialised world, with more than one third of all the populations studied, showing insufficient levels of vitamin D. DXA Now as Good as X-rays in Osteoporosis Screening

A change in DXA diagnostic cut offs (T-scores) for PBS prevention therapy means DXA is now as good as vertebral X-rays for identifying women eligible for fracture prevention, research shows. (Read More)
