Preparing for the Naturalization Test: The Citizenship Resource Center
At USCIS, we know that the decision to become a U.S. citizen is one of the most meaningful decisions in an individual’s life. USCIS has a lot to offer for those wishing to become citizens. The form required to apply, the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization is available for free on our website, or you can order it by mail or phone at 1-800-870-3676.
We also invite those preparing for the naturalization test to also visit our Citizenship Resource Center.
What Happens During the Interview?
During the naturalization interview with a USCIS Officer, you will be tested on your knowledge of civics and your ability to speak, understand, read, and write English.
- Your ability to speak and understand English will be determined by a USCIS Officer from your answers to questions normally asked during the eligibility interview on the Application for Naturalization, Form N-400.
- For the English portion, you will be given both a reading test and a writing test. You must read 1 out of 3 sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to read in English. You must write 1 out of 3 sentences correctly to demonstrate an ability to write in English.
- For the civics portion, you will be asked up to 10 questions from the list of 100 questions. You must answer 6 out of 10 questions correctly to pass the civics portion of the naturalization test.

Test Your Knowledge
After reviewing the educational products we offer, try the Naturalization Self Test as a means to test your knowledge. Please note that the actual civics test is NOT a multiple choice test, but an oral test. This “Self Test” was prepared as a learning tool to help you assess your progress.
What Happens if You Don’t Pass?
You will be given two opportunities to take the English and civics tests and to answer all questions related to your naturalization application in English. If you fail any of the tests during your initial interview, you will be retested on the portion of the test that you failed (English or civics) between 60 and 90 days from the date of your initial interview.
What is the Pass Rate?
For those applicants taking both the English and civics tests, the overall national pass rate as of June 2011 is 92 percent. To view scoring guidelines and background data, and other information, visit the “Applicant Performance on the Naturalization Test” page.

How can I found out when are the Naturalization Ceremonies in Pittsburgh?
I already took the test. The book and the CD that the USCIS provided at the finger prints were extremely useful. Thank you. I also found a free app to prepare for the test and it was very good.

If a person pass the test and interview, can he be given an opportunity to take the oath on the same day i.e on the interview day.

I became a US Citizen last year but my husband, who is 75 years old, failed two times. The reason is that when he goes in front of the officer, he gets nervous and can not reply the question properly. He can read and write english but not very fluently. Is there any arrangement that you provide an interpreter becasue he is more comfortable in his mothertongue. i.e.Hindi language?

Enlglish is my first language, I have paid taxes for 10 years. I took American history in school, I know it like the back of my hand. My grandparents help build this country. And I am rotting in the EB3 ROW line, can't even get a green card. And these people can't even pass a test but have green cards. This is why this country is going down.
If there any help for people who want to be a U.S.A Citizen but loss their jobs ,and do not have the money to pay for the filling fees.?
Wonderful job USCIS! I've had a smooth transition with the agency from a regular employment authorization document to a 2 year green card and now to my 10 year card .However I got stuck in the process of becoming a U.S citizen for months now.I think it would be a great idea if the agency hires more workers at the field offices in big cities like washington,DC(where my application for naturalization is "sleeping") ,New york city, newark,NJ;Boston where the processing times are way higher than the normal 5 months that this process is supposed to take.This blob used to have people from uscis responding to certain posts,things we don't see anymore.....Please take this particular post in consideration....Thanks for a great job!
hello iam a woman waiting for years to be with my family there in USA :MY PARENTS were there and four brothers,with three sisters still there and the papers took too time to come. it is very nicew for me tro make an exam in english i have no problem . i think i have a good idea and i can talk very well. i spent four months in VA. usa i passed well. the first step is to be there with my family then i will think in exams . thanks , sincerly yours AMAL.
Thanks uscis for the tremendous effort you guys put in everyday to help the large number of immigrants that use your services for various immigration benefits....I do however want to point out as did the last person who posted a comment on September 12th that the Washington,DC field is running way behind compared to every other field office out there and part of it is probably because that field (located in Fairfax,VA ) Serves both the residents of northern Virginia and the whole Washington,DC.....With so many office buildings in DC, I think it would be a great idea for uscis to open a separate office in Washington,DC so things can move a lot quicker in Virginia.....It's just not fair

I'm an interpreter and was assigned to assist a gentlemen who was informed that if he didn't speak english "100%" he needed to bring an interpreter along, as such, I have to follow a code of ethics regarding my clients and make sure that the communication is accurate and clarify any questions they may have, which is why we bring glossaries and note pads to take notes if necessary. I COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW RUDE, ABUSIVE AND OUT OF LINE THE IMMIGRATION AGENT WAS WHEN I WAS REFUSE THE RIGHT TO TAKE NOTES FOR MY CLIENT'S BENEFIT AND WHEN I QUESTIONNED WHY THE AGENT THREATEN TO CANCEL THE INTERVIEW, LATER INTERFERING WITH MY SERVICE AND FORCING MY CLIENT TO SPEAK HIS BROKEN ENGLISH. ALL I COULD DO WAS SEAT THERE AND WATCH THIS AGENT'S ABUSE OF POWER. Immigrant or citizen, everybody deserves respect.
To the above comment posted by INTERPRETER , if this is your first encounter with a "RUDE , ABUSE OF POWER , ARROGANT AND DISRESPECTFUL " USCIS official , your are a very lucky person . This has become such common abuse to qapplicants being interviewed at local USCIS offices , that people go into panic mode at the thought of going in for an appointment . These officers are so miserable and unhappy at their work , they seem to take it out of their subjects . You can feel a sense of hate and dislike towards the very clients that help pay for their salaries . ABUSIVE is what it is , no one does anything about it , people feel as if they cannot complain to supervisors,feel like it may affect their process . We are victims of these hostile people . They can spend as much as they want on incentives to apply for N-400 , but I hope they do some kind of retraining on customer service and respect . The compplaints are overwhelming .
If you are 50 and have been in the US for 20 years, do you still need to take read and writing test, Am an entitle to bring my own interperter.
50 years and have been in 15 years is it the same as 50/20 requirement,
65/20 only 20 quetion do they need to write and read test.
hello, i got married in africa before coming to the us.i came as a refugee. i got married aftrer i was granted asylum. i tried sending for my husband once and was denied, because lack of evidence.that was abt 9 yrs ago. all my recent documents including tax return, ive filled as single.for the past 7 yrs i have not heard from my husband or know where he is. now that i applying for my citizenship, im being ask to provide some paper about the yr in which we were married. unfortunatelym, i dont have any documations on our marriage, and i dont know where he is. i hope this is not going to effect me.. help plz any advice??????

This is very useful information and video for some one who want to take citizenship. I think a candidate not to be an expert in the English but if he can communicate in English may clear the test.
